While downsizing our business in 2019 to manage residential landscaping together as a couple, we also began facing a critical issue involving animal lives: the local stray cat problem. As pet owners living with dogs and cats at the time, we were deeply saddened by the sheer number of stray cats around us. Fearing that things would only worsen, we started a monthly flea market in front of a local supermarket to raise awareness about spay and neuter surgeries. This was the very beginning of our journey.【Our Journey So Far and the Birth of Fujimoto Shoten】In 2020, we established "Neko no Yado" (Cat's Inn), an official community cat activity group certified by Okagaki Town. Following this, we registered "Machi-Neko Community" (Town Cat Community) with the Okagaki Town Council of Social Welfare. We have since been promoting community cat initiatives as representatives for the Munakata-Onga Health and Welfare Environmental Office and as authorized Animal Welfare Promoters for Fukuoka Prefecture.To fund the nursery, medical, and operational costs for the rescued cats, we opened a secondhand clothing and secondhand goods shop named "Chibi House." Word spread through social media and word-of-mouth, allowing us to build understanding and empathy for community cat activities among many residents. Despite the economic downturn and soaring prices following the pandemic, our desire to keep affordable clothing available for elderly residents led us to open a second branch in Kurate, following our first store in Okagaki. Today, we are widely known and supported by the community under our current store name, "Fujimoto Shoten."【August 2026: Our Resolve to Resume Full-Scale Activities】Thanks to everyone's cooperation, consultation requests regarding stray cats dropped to nearly zero at one point. Consequently, we paused our public operations for the past two years, handling inquiries only via email. However, in just those two years, the situation completely reversed. Kittens are flooding the streets once again, and the number of rescued cats in our own home has finally surpassed 20. Realizing that we must act now before it is too late, we have decided to resume our community cat activities at full scale in August 2026. This time, we have successfully arranged to bring a "Spay Clinic" (a mobile clinic specializing in spay and neuter surgeries) to Okagaki Town—a milestone we could not achieve in the past. Moving forward, we plan to establish these mobile surgery sessions as a regular fixture, aiming to increase the frequency from 4 times a year, to 6 times, and eventually to a monthly basis.【Our Future Guidelines and a Request for New Strength】As our next challenge, we aim to adapt and introduce a pioneering initiative called "Senior cats for Senior citizens," which originally launched in Niigata City in May 2026. This system allows elderly residents up to 75 years old to adopt older cats aged 10 and above. To sustain and grow these activities, we need "new strength" (new teammates) in addition to the wonderful members we have recently met.
